Above the World, 2004-5
Traditional brushed ink painting of China and Japan, which informs so much of my work, was painted on scrolls, in a tall, vertical format. They used atmospheric, rather than geometric, perspective to create distance, becoming clearer and more detailed as the eye moved downward. The scroll could be slowly unrolled from the top down, the final focus surprising the viewer at the very end.
