Cranes, 2000
In 2000, I began a series of what would become eleven large drawing/paintings on paper, made from sketches of sandhill cranes done at the Woodland Park Zoo, where I went every week with my daughter. As I followed the movements of the cranes, at first with their heads down to the ground, later in various poses of alarm and repose, in my head were Erik Satie's piano Gnossiennes, and the performance directives the composer wrote into the scores. These guided my tentative search, from the initial Ask! (questionnez), through On the edge of an idea (du bout de la pensée) and Alone for a moment (seul, pendant un instant), and finally How to achieve absolutely nothing (de manière à obtenir un creux).
