The Floating World, 2002
In 17th century Japan, the “floating world” (ukiyo) referred to the urban world of fleeting pleasure; I am corrupting it here to a somewhat different sense, that of a world of light that floats above, and through, our illusions of solidity and permanence. Mountains float above the earth like a blackbird among bamboo leaves; ginkgo leaves drift down beside a heavy earthenware pot; poetry rises above its own sodden lines; pumpkins waft heavenward like smoke…
