“Old water” is a term oceanographers use for water that has been isolated in the deep ocean, away from light and air, for centuries. Seawater travels around the earth in vast global currents, both on the surface and deep in the ocean. A “parcel” of water may take 1,000 years to make its way around the world. In my scientific work I often make 'false color' figures, called time-depth plots, to visualize ocean data. In 2018, recognizing these colorful data plots as a form of seascape, I began to paint imaginary 'seascapes' that envision the waves below the waves.
